NotebookLM: Features, Pricing, and Alternatives (2026)

Research notebook that answers only from the sources you upload

Website Last reviewed August 26, 2026

Best for: Researchers and students working through a defined set of documents

The best tool in this directory for working through a fixed set of documents, and the free tier covers most people entirely. Treat it as a research notebook rather than an assistant: outside your own sources it does nothing.

What is NotebookLM?

NotebookLM inverts how an assistant usually works. Instead of answering from the whole web, it answers only from the sources you put in the notebook: PDFs, web pages, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs and Slides.

Every response carries citations that point at the exact passage, so verifying a claim takes one click rather than a separate search. That constraint is the product.

It cannot wander off into invented context because it has nowhere to wander to, which is why researchers, students and analysts use it on material they cannot afford to have paraphrased loosely.

Audio Overview is the feature that made it famous: one click turns a pile of sources into a two-host discussion you can listen to, which turns dense reading into something you can do while walking.

google address and the original name are what people still search for. The free tier allows up to 50 sources per notebook.

Google AI Plus doubles the generation limits and allows 100 sources, Pro gives five times the generations and 300 sources, and Ultra raises generation limits up to fiftyfold.

NotebookLM key features

  1. Grounded in your sources only

Answers come from the documents in the notebook and nowhere else, which removes the usual risk of invented context.

  2. Citations to the exact passage

Every claim links to the quote it came from, so checking a figure takes one click instead of a separate search.

  3. Audio Overview

Turns a set of sources into a two-host spoken discussion you can listen to instead of reading.

  4. Mixed source types

PDFs, web pages, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs and Slides in the same notebook, with questions spanning all of them.

  5. Study and briefing outputs

Generates study guides, briefing documents, timelines and FAQ sets from the material rather than a flat summary.

  6. Notebook sharing

Share a notebook so a team asks questions of the same source set rather than passing files around.

NotebookLM FAQ

Is NotebookLM free?

Yes, with standard generation limits and up to 50 sources per notebook. Higher limits come bundled with the Google AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscriptions rather than being sold separately.

Is NotebookLM the same as Gemini Notebook?

Yes. Google renamed the product Gemini Notebook, and it still lives at notebooklm.google. The features, the notebooks and the free tier are unchanged.

What sources can NotebookLM read?

PDFs, web pages, YouTube videos, audio files, Google Docs and Google Slides, mixed in the same notebook, with questions that span all of them.

What is an Audio Overview?

A generated spoken discussion between two hosts covering your sources, produced in one click. It turns a set of documents into something you can listen to.

Does NotebookLM use my documents to train Google models?

Google states uploaded sources and notebook conversations are excluded from model training, which is the reason it is usable on unpublished work.

Does NotebookLM have an API?

No. There is no public API, so it cannot be scripted or embedded. For programmatic work the Gemini API is the route Google points to instead.

How much does NotebookLM cost?

NotebookLM paid plans start at $4.99/mo (Included with Google AI Plus). A free plan is available. Prices checked on August 26, 2026.
